Video Nystagmography (VNG): An Overview
Videonystagmography (VNG) is a test that measures a type of eye
movement that we can't control. These eye movements are called as
nystagmus. With nystagmus, the eyes move from side to side, up and
down, or in a circle. The movements can be slow or fast, steady or jerky.
VNG test uses a special set of goggles with a camera to record the eye
movements.
It's used to diagnose conditions that affect balance and motion such as
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the most common cause of vertigo in adults
- Meniere's disease, which causes vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a fullness in ears
- Labyrinthitis, a balance disorder that occurs when parts of inner ear become inflamed
- Vestibular neuritis, which involves inflammation of the inner ear or vestibular nerve
- Vestibular Migraine
- In certain types of vertigo related to central nervous system
